From Reception to Year 2 children are taught to spell through our Systematic Synthetic Phonics program, Read Write Inc. Children learn how to segment spoken words into sounds for spelling. This is practiced daily and embedded in additional Literacy sessions.
In Years 3 to 6 children use the PiXL ‘Clued Spelling’ system which is differentiated through diagnosis, therapy, testing (DTT). Spellings are taught in the Friday spelling and handwriting session. Spellings are sent home weekly for practice at home and a test is also completed weekly as part of DTT. This method ensures that all children are allocated spellings specific to them.
The spelling lists are based on:
• The first 300 high frequency words
• Selected spelling from the next 400 – 1000 high frequency words
• Spellings from the National Curriculum for Years 3 & 4 and Years 5 & 6
• Past SATS papers
